Blue Has Found His Forever Home!

Lucky Sweet Boy Blue met his new parents in Vienna and it was love at first lick. He's moving to McLean, VA, where he'll be able to chase squirrels and go fetch in his fenced-in backyard, run around with a mouthful of squeaky toys inside, and make wonderful dog and kid friends on his beautiful new street.

His wonderful family is so lucky and we're so excited for him!

Hooray for Blue!

Blue Report, Week One

Learning more about Sweet Boy Blue. Here's a few snapshots of our week together:

*Blue loves to play "Keep Away" with Bella at the park. When she has the ball, he happily chases her. When he does, he runs mad laps backs and forth and then buries the ball. (Bella then digs it up and the game resumes).

*Blue found a fabulous stuffed and squeaky porcupine and hustled around the apartment with it, squeaking (he, not the porcupine), looking for a suitable place to bury it. He finally lit on a really good place: Back in the toy chest. No one will think to look there!

*Blue's an Olympic-level snuggler. He likes to lie on me with his face on my chest so he can look up at me. When pushed off, he snuggles up under my arm.

*Blue loves all dogs. If we are out walking and a dog happens past, he squeaks to let me know he MUST say hello. As Bella is NOT interested in saying hello to many dogs, I've had to let him down more than a few times. He gives a little "Aw, man" squeak and then continues happily on his way.

*Blue does not like trucks. When one rumbles by, he stands very close to me and appreciates a pat. He appears to be thinking that something so very big and so very rumbly is a safety risk. I know another fantastic Aussie shep who barks her head off at trucks, so apparently this breed just isn't appreciative of interstate commerce or easy home delivery.

*Blue loves to engage Bella. They are playing tug-a-duck right now. But he's also game for running up and down the condo stairs, looking out the window, snuggling...

*Blue is a dream to walk. He's still learning the leash concept (he's a bit of a zig-zagger walker), but he goes out, pees immediately and poops shortly thereafter. None of this looking for the perfect hydrant or must be out of eye-shot of the house nonsense.

*Blue is very happy at mealtime, but he doesn't rush the kitchen or try to steal food and he often ambles off before he finishes to come by and give me a 'thanks, lady' lick.

Blue is a great, great guy. He's got a lot of energy--I think he'd make a super running buddy. He's be a wonderful second dog--or only, but he'd really appreciate your patronizing your local dog park. He's been a dream with the kids he's met. When I last held a baby, he wanted to put his head up on my knees so he could look at her; I pushed him down and he didn't protest.

The tug-a-duck battle halted abruptly when I went to fetch the camera.

Adventures of Blue Dog

You know it was just a matter of time. Blue has won over Bella.
Their favorite activity is chasing each other up and down the stairs of my condo.

We spent this evening at the local dog park and, as usual, Blue loved everyone. He's an active, curious boy. (Who tonight has decided it's fun to pull books off my coffee table. Hmm. He's pretty smart. Wouldn't put reading past him.) This morning he discovered the porcupine squeaky toy and ran from room to room with it before settling down to chew on him. He's left the books and is currently relaxing on the floor with a soon-to-be stuffingless duck.

He'll definitely want a forever family that loves to play!

I can also say with confidence that Blue is housetrained, as he's been with us for five days and has done his business only outside. He even stood by the door one day when he had to go. Pretty cool.

Blue, Looking Handsome

Can You Help?

Blue was saved from a life on the streets by the hard-working folks at Ritchie shelter in West VA--and now word comes that the shelter is almost out of food! If you can spare some money for the wonderful dogs at Ritchie, go to the Humane Society's PayPal site:

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/WV22.html

and click "Make a donation." (There are also other buttons you are welcome to click to donate things like tick meds).

THANK YOU!

Sweet Boy Blue

Yesterday, just before the rain hit hard, I parked the car in the lot at Dog Paws in Arlington. Safely on the curb, there he was, our newest Sweet Boy foster. He looked so happy! I asked the guy holding SB if this were he and he said, "I don't actually know." But I did. He looks just like he did in his star-making video on his Petfinder page. [Update: Oh man, they took the video down!]
"Are you a foster or an adopter?" the guy holding the gorgeous dog asked and then warned me that there's something especially special him--and I might not be able to let him go.

And there is! Plucked off the streets of West Virginia by the kind people of Ritchie County and given to me for safekeeping by the kind ones at Homeward Trails, he's happy and loving and beautiful as can be. He listens very well and sits in his crate without a peep (though he's not too keen on getting in). He wants desperately to play with Bella, but I suspect she knows Mom's in love--and she's a bit jealous. So far, she's been telling him the house is hers--That bone? Oh that one's mine. Yes, and the other one too-- but they played well at Shirlington dog park, where we decided to wander on Sunday after I realized he wasn't all that tired after all.

All Saturday I tossed around names... and one finally stuck (for me--his forever family may very well find a better moniker): Blue. As in 'Dont Be.'

Blue's thrilled to have a place to rest his head and a bowl of food to eat but he'd prefer to kiss you--literally. He'll leave the bowl and the bed to follow me around and lay his fluffy head on my lap and look up at me with those amazing big brown eyes.
Bella knows it too--Blue is a wonderful catch and she has this to say:

Humans! Take this dog before my mother forgets all about her beloved first- adopted wunderpooch (me). He's handsome and smart and he really should go live with you as soon as you can make that happen!

Ok, Bella, that's enough.
Hope you'll come meet Blue soon!

Oh, and he's supposedly *not* housebroken but he's followed Bella's lead and done his business only outside so far....Didn't I tell you he was smart?

grumble...
Bella!

Bella is *yawn* sooo bored by Blue's sweetness

NOTE: IF YOU BOUGHT A RAFFLE FOR THEO, PLEASE CHECK OUT HIS BLOGSPOT PAGE:(TheoTheBeagle.blogspot.com) TO SEE IF YOU WON!!!!!!!!!

Blue is a male Australian shep/hound mix. He's 37 lbs (not 50, like the Petfinder page says) and about 1 years old. Loves people. Loves other dogs. Haven't seen him with cats yet. He was non-plussed around a baby and interested in sniffing some little kids, but didn't jump.
